My interest in writing began in college while pursuing my BA in English with a minor in Film Studies and an emphasis in Criticism and Theory.
For the last 6 years, I've developed and applied my writing and media knowledge as the in-house copywriter, designer, and content manager for an online wellness and percussion brand, developing written content for SEO, digital ads, social media, email marketing, blogs, webstore listings, and mailers.
I'm also a creative writer in my spare time. I'm as much of an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi as I am of theory and criticism. My philosophical interests include post-structuralism and post-modernism, dialectical materialism, capitalist realism, and hauntology. I'm a fan of George Saunders, Don DeLillo, Ursula le Guin, Robin Hobb, Zadie Smith, William Gibson, Julia Alvarez, and Raymond Carver.
See some examples of my commercial and personal creative written work below.
For online retailers, digital advertising is the ocean we live in. Organic social media, newsletters, blogs, SEO – they're all part of the delicate ecosystem, the marine biology of online retail.
In my role as a copywriter, digital ads (and specifically Meta ads) have been the phytoplankton of our delicate online ecosystem. I've gained a wealth of experience tailoring copy to digital ads. Below, you can find some writing samples from digital ad campaigns.
In my role as a copywriter in the new age and wellness sphere — an industry filled with misinformation — I strive to maintain a strong balance of scientifically-grounded information with content that is also open-minded to a spiritual or new age point of view. I have to be intentional, discerning, and well-researched to craft responsible and informative content for our community.
The blog entry linked below was created to educate both our customers and ourselves on a popular trend while further establishing ourselves as a trusted source of information in the community.
Gongs Unlimited is firmly established in the world of gongs, but as we expanded into Crystal Singing Bowls through our other store, Unlimited Singing Bowls, we had to think about how to stay on top of SEO while also establishing ourselves as an authority on crystal bowls (a growing trend in sound therapy and related fields).
This blog entry was our attempt to dispel some of the myths used by our competitors, leveling the informational playing field while improving our search ranking and building customer trust.
Alexandre Tannous is a known leader and teacher in the sound therapy world. He's also been one of our regular customers since the very early days of Gongs Unlimited. Over time, he developed a wholesale dealer relationship with us, connecting his students with our products and helping recommend specific instruments to them.
His work has helped to legitimize and ground the field of sound therapy, making it accessible for all kinds of people. His academic, research-based approach is invaluable. This blog entry was a way to build and foster connection and community while highlighting a trusted educational resource for our customers.
With monthly newsletters, the store has been able to increase sales while staying in touch with subscribers and building an energized and dedicated customer base. It's also a great place to exercise a strong brand voice and identity while promoting new products, blogs, and other educational content.
Using segmentation, our newsletters can be targeted to small groups of subscribers, allowing us to send specific offers and discounts on products that are perfect for them based on their past purchases. See a sampling of some of our newsletters below.
Read the first few chapters of my speculative fiction story "The Long Night," set in 2087.
I was inspired to write this story and the character of Bek Rios after imagining what life might be like for my hypothetical great-grandchild.
Read a short sample of my speculative fiction story, "The Song of S'ruq," set in a world I created called Casturia.
This story started as an attempt to practice worldbuilding and pathworking.
I was inspired to write my short story "Backwater" after reading the George Saunders story "Sea Oak".
I wanted to use post-modern surrealism as a vehicle to tell a story about two brothers from a small rural town in a single scene.
